Herpetologist Brian Kubicki has discovered and described a new species of glass frog that looks eerily similar (at least the eyes do) to Kermit the Frog of Muppet fame. At least that is what the mainstream media thinks. The frog, Hyalinobatrachium dianae has lime green skin, a translucent belly and eyes that look just like Kermit. Kubicki says that the frog’s call may have prevented it from being discovered earlier as it is very unique.

Four New Species of See-Through Glass Frogs Discovered in Peru
“The advertisement call that the males of this species produce are very unique, no other known species of frog has a similar call, and this was indeed one of the traits that we used for the justification of it being a completely new species,” Kubicki told CBS News. But because the call is so different – a long metallic whistle that sounds more like an insect than most other frogs – it “could have played a role in its going undetected prior.”
The new species was discovered in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica and is the first new species of glass frog discovered in the Latin American country in more than 40 years. So what do you think? Does Hyalinobatrachium dianae look like everyone’s favorite Muppet?
