Employees at a grocery store in southern New Hampshire discovered a snake that was found in a shipment of bananas. New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief responded to the call from the grocery store. Upon arrival, the conservation officer determined the species to be an Ornate Cat-eyed snake (Leptodeira ornata). This snake is mildly venomous and native to the lowlands of western Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia. The snake was unharmed and appeared in good health. It was rehomed with Rainforest Reptile Shows, Inc. Rainforest Reptile Shows cares for more than 60 venomous reptiles.

The Ornate cat-eyed snake (Leptodeira ornata) can be found in broad ranging and diverse ecosystems. These include rainforests and dry forests. They are also found in high numbers in marshes, swamps, and lagoons. Exclusively nocturnal, the Ornate cat-eyed snake is both terrestrial and semi-arboreal and is at home foraging through leaf litter. It grows to between 60 and 100cm in length and its color is mottled brown, tan and gray with dark blotches. It has cat-like pupils, hence the name, and is mildly venomous, perhaps attaining its venom from the frogs and toads that it eats.
These snakes feed on mostly on frogs, including the Cachabi robber frog (Pristimantis achatinus), Túngara frog (Engystomops pustulosus), and Rhinella bella. Rhinella bella is a very toxic cane toad species that was described just last year.
