The frog was described in the September issue of Japan's English launguage Current Herpetology and is distinct from other frogs in the region due to its divergent genetic and morphological traits. It is distinct from other species due to its unique green dorsum. Other related species have gray to brown dorsums. According to Thanh Nien News, Kurixalus viridescens is the seventh Kurixalus treefrog species that is native to the Southeast Asian nation.
