The park was originally opened to save the island nation’s komodo dragons. It has since expanded the scope of its mission to protect other native wildlife at the park.

The Komodo dragon can be found on Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar islands in the Indonesian archipelago. It is the world’s largest lizard and can attain sizes of up to 10 feet and weigh more than 150 pounds.
The park was founded in 1980 and has a total area of around 1,733 square kilometers.
