Petco is assisting Wild Rescue Inc. of Lewisville, Texas, in placing more than 2,000 recently rescued exotic animals. The animals, which include small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, will be available for adoption beginning Feb. 9 at select Petco stores in Texas.

The animals were seized during the December raid of U.S. Global Exotics, an Arlington, Texas-based animal wholesaler. More than 26,000 animals in all were reportedly removed from the facility where they were allegedly kept in inhumane conditions.

“We were appalled by the tragedy at U.S. Global Exotics, and we’re thrilled to help these animals in any way we can,” said Susan Rosenberg, national adoptions and disaster relief manager for the Petco Foundation, the retailer’s non-profit arm. “But we need the help of our local communities, too. We encourage anyone who’s been considering adding a new companion animal to their family to join our efforts to help by adopting one of these special animals and giving them the happy, healthy homes they deserve.”

The animals will be available for adoption at 22 Petco locations in the Dallas area. Included among the adoptable animals are green anoles, geckos, fire-bellied toads, garter snakes, green iguanas, hermit crabs, long-tailed grass lizards, mice, hamsters and White’s treefrogs.
