Hatchling sea turtles are cute and all but trying to keep them in a fish tank is not cool. That is the story coming out of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as it cited  William Henry Jowett of Jupiter, Fla. for possessing two loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) hatchlings, a first-degree misdemeanor. If found guilty he could face a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.

These poor sea turtles spent a few months in a saltwater aquarium.

According to the FWC, Jowett captured the sea turtles from the canal in his backyard two months ago and put them in his aquarium so his daughter could observe them. However, instead of releasing them as he apparently had planned to, he kept them in the tank as he grew attached to them being in the tank.

These hatchling loggerhead sea turtles have been released back into the ocean.

The FWC removed the turtles from the saltwater aquarium and sent them to the Loggerhead Marine Life Sanctuary Center in Juno Beach. They were later released offshore.
