I’m planning on getting a fire skink and I really don’t know if I should get a red heat lamp or is there a different kind that I’m supposed to use cuz I have a bearded dragon a crested gecko and a leopard gecko and we already know that the leopard gecko is ok with out and that the beardie has a 100watt red heat lamp and everyone who’s ever read up on crested geckos know that they dont need like anything and this will be my first skink so I just really don’t know

I have 3 fire skinks. They were purchased together in a pet shop although I know it says they shouldn’t be housed more than two together . I’m unsure on what sex they are but they get on ok and do their own thing and have their own hiding spots although two of them tend to stay together more. They have a large 4ft viv with loads of hiding places so it’s big enough for them to stay out of each other’s way. They are surprisingly very active and I almost always have at least one roaming around. Mine do not like to be handled and are extremely fast and have bitten me a few times (and yes it bled but wasn’t too painful) They are great little pets though and beautiful to look at.

Actually, I had a herpatologist tell me that they can eat a “good” canned cat food as long as they are supplemented with crickets and worms every once in awhile. It has all the nutrients they need. Our fire skink has been been eating canned cat food for years and he’s as healthy as he can possibly be.

I would recommend not feeding cat food to a lizard. Specifically because a lizard is not a cat.

These make great pets. Mine took cat food (often with some added calcium) without any problem. Of course they were also given a diet of insects, mainly crickets. They liked snails as well. Lived to an age of about 18 years and were pretty easy to handle and seemed not to mind being stroked when sitting on my hand.
