The gecko, Cnemaspis Girii was named after noted Indian herpetologist Varad Giri.
Herpetologists with India's Bengaluru National Centre for Biological Sciences and Centre for Ecological Studies have discovered a new lizard of the family Gekkonidae, in the Western Ghats mountains of India while turning over rocks near a stream. The gecko, named Cnemaspis Girii after noted Indian herpetologist Varad Giri, who was the first person to discover a Cnemaspis species.

Two New Frog Species Discovered In India
According to the paper, the gecko is different from the other 17 species of Cnemaspis lizard in that it dwells under rocks, stones and hollowed out trees located near streams and other bodies of water. The lizard is also different in that its scales on the upper body have different sizes and shapes; it features yellow dots on its body and is yellowish in coloration with dark markings on its body and a spot of black on its neck. It is less than two inches in length
The four credited with the discovery are Zeeshan Mirza, Harshal Bhosle, Saunak Pal and Rajesh Sanap. Their paper, "A new species of gecko of the genus Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 from the Western Ghats, India" can be found in the journal Zootaxa.
