Do you know anyone who keeps bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) and leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) in Stoughton, MA, and left them on a sidewalk in the city? The Stoughton Police Department would like to know. Someone left the reptiles on the sidewalk, just a few days before Christmas.

“Have you ever walked down the street carrying your lizards in a cage and put them down for a second to maybe update your Facebook page or scratch your nose or something? If so have you ever just continued your brisk walk and gotten to your destination and yelled… “oh wait… my lizards!! Where did I leave them last?” Well if you have you may be in luck, because we have recovered these remarkably creepy yet shockingly majestic creatures,” the Stoughton Police Department wrote on its Facebook page December 21. “And before we get all super judgey about the thought of some careless lizard owner ditching their lizards in the street, we are going to assume the circumstances outlined above happened. We have your lizards and they are being taken care of. Please call us at 781-344-2424 to explain why you left your lizards on the sidewalk.”

The department yesterday added a second post to its Facebook page, announcing that the reptiles have still not been claimed, and are now in the hands of professionals, as no owner has been located.

Leopard geckos and bearded dragons are the most popular lizards kept as pets. These reptiles are widely captive-bred in the United States and with proper care, can live very long lives. Hopefully these lizards will find a good home soon.
