“We’re no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of
You wouldn’t get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We’ve known each other for so long
Your heart’s been aching but you’re too shy to say it
Inside we both know what’s been going on
We know the game and we’re gonna play it
And if you ask me how I’m feeling
Don’t tell me you’re too blind to see
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give, never gonna give
(Give you up)
(Ooh) Never gonna give, never gonna give
(Give you up)
We’ve known each other for so long
Your heart’s been aching but you’re too shy to say it

“Hi ! I’ve never owned an aquatic animal.

Do I have to ensure the tank has light damping glass or something like that . Just to accommodate for low light. So I can see it and it’s comfortable. Does it have to stay in a dark room at all tines.

Also what is the exact process for changing water ?
Do I need to remove the Axolotl from its enclosure, into another to do this ? ( won’t this cause stress ..)
Do you partially drain the water and add new water. But do I need the new water to be treated in advance to ensure it meets the correct parameters before water transfer can happen.

Do I take the little guy when cleaning the cage. Do they have gender ?

Last one can they be out of the water for a transfer, how brief ?

“I’m currently making a care sheet to give to the homes of over 100 axolotls. this list is incomplete and just plain wrong in allot of places. That first photo of an wild axolotl in CA is an example of an unhealthy axolotl.

AGAIN ALLOT OF THIS INFORMATION IS WRONG AND WILL CAUSE YOUR AXOLOTLS TO SUFFER QUIETLY

“If anyone is interested I have made a simplified list of everything you need to know based off of this

Axolotl

Axolotl like sand

20 gallon tank for 1 axolotl add 10 gallons for ever additional axolotl

Axolotl are not social creatures but are not aggressive for the most part

Ph of 7.5 is perfect for them

Average size from tall tip to nose is 10in

Axolotls have been known to live past 20 years but it is unusual to find one older than 10 years

Amphibians but never really go to land and stay in the water

Nocturnal so keep low light to avoid agitation

Like lots of hiding places

Like a temperature of 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit

Like lots of plants

Create eco system by letting water sit for 1-2 weeks to let bacteria’s grow and let filter run to clean the water of impurity

Eat night crawlers and frozen bloodworm cubes

Make sure not to feed earth worms they secrete a toxin

Good treat for them is frozen (cooked) shrimp and lean pieces of beef and chicken

Avoid live food because they do not care if it is live or not and this will help avoid parasites and diseases because they are very vulnerable to them

No need for vitamin and mineral supplements they get it from there food

Have no boned and soft flesh

Young axolotl tend to nip and bite off legs and gills of others so should be well fed and kept in a large space

Natural slate tiles sealed with 100% Silicon Sealant is perfect bottom for them because sand can still cause damage if to much is digested

Best if the water contains the minimum amount possible of chlorine
Posted by Anonymous, Jun 8, 2018 02:40 AM

I have been making aquariums that are retrofitted with natural slate tiles and sealed with 100% Silicon Sealant. It is great for all types of salamanders especially the ones that are known to eat substrate, even sand can cause gut impact (more common in juvenile Axolotl that are overly enthusiastic about eating). I recommend this option especially for Axolotl and Leopard Geckos, and it is extremely easy to clean. I had an Axolotl live in a 10 gallon tank for 12 years. Of course I had an external filter that was intended for a 20 gallon tank with a spray bar, a small piece of Moppi Wood, and live free floating Hornwort. Weekly 50% water changes/glass and slate scrubbed, monthly scrubbing of the wood. I combined nightcrawlers and Endler/Guppies ( I had plenty of these, they breed really quick and I have them in my aqua-scaping tank, so I had to find a way to limit my community, they are healthy). If you want to give your Axolotl live fish (most “experts” are against doing it because of the risk of disease, I breed my own so the risk is extremely minimum if any) I give them to mine because I breed them and know that they are healthy. I only fed my Axolotl Nightcrawlers 2 times a week, if it wanted more food it had to catch the fish (make sure when feeding your Axolotl Nightcrawlers that they are Nightcrawlers and not Red Earthworms/Red Wigglers ( they secrete a toxin).

Posted by Anonymous, May 15, 2018 11:03 AM

My axolotl is 11 inches long, and quite large, but she has been off her food for several weeks, but has not lost any weight. I have tried tempting her with night crawlers, wax worms and locusts, but she literally turns her nose up. she has now started floating at teh top of her tank on occasion, but is still very active, has anyone got any ideas if this is normal ? She is a Leucistic axolotl and her gills are very healthy and pink, she shows no sign of being ill at all, i am perplexed..

instead of using tap water and conditioner would bottled water be good as its already clear of all chlorine?

You can by conditioner at any pet store or even Wal-Mart. Something like “safe start” is good. As long as it says “makes tap water safe” then it is conditioner.

How big are axolotls at birth?
Posted by Anonymous, Dec 12, 2017 11:26 AM

Actually, you need a substrate. NO GRAVEL because they can suck it up. Just very fine sand. Axolotls need something to grip onto, without sand to grip onto, they get stressed which can lead to many complications.

how ling does it take until they turn into salamanders from day 1 (egg hatching day)
Posted by Anonymous, Sep 30, 2017 05:05 PM

My group at OTB(Outside The Box) in Indiana are making provisions to get a Axolotl for our room. Just an FYI, under Fire Salamander; some paragraphs start without a capital(this is always done for the first letter and/or word of a sentence). Any single “i” should be capitalized(“I”) cause you are announcing yourself.
Posted by Anonymous, Sep 28, 2017 05:34 PM

“hey to answer your question about your axolotl losing its gills i did some research and found this.

If your pet’s losing its gills, it’s probably preparing for metamorphosis. If you suspect that your pet is beginning to metamorphose, you should be sure exactly what kind of animal it is. While metamorphosis is perfectly normal for tiger salamanders, axolotls usually only do it when there’s something wrong with their environment. Please see the page on how to tell the difference between the two kinds of animals before you start making room for the change- you may be able to stop the process by fixing the problem, if there is one.

i believe this suggests that you don’t have enough oxygen in your tank so he may be adjusting to breath air.

my axolotl is fairly new maybe 5 months old but something strange is happening so he now is by himself we did feed him feeder fish for the first week because the store we got them from told us that is what he eats after doing my own research i discovered the proper care for him and changed to it fast how ever he is now 5 6 months away from that first week and there is something growing in the tank i thought they were mites but cant find anything suggesting that this is possible under water they are to small to see definition but they are alive and they move pretty fast and there is a lot of them can anyone help

“I’m on your website regarding Axolotls, studying Bacterial and Fungal Problems. From the description I’ve been reading about Aeromonas hydrophila, “”red leg”” bacteria, I believe my 6 yr old Axolotl is suffering from this as his feet are mottled red and his toes are becoming misshapen and shortened.
I have had the tank water checked – it is good. It averages 72 degrees. He is in a 15 gallon tank with no substrate but has drift wood threaded with live moss. There was an algea bloom in the tank about 3 months ago which was cleared up taking the wood and plants out and doing recommended water changes daily. the water has been clear for about 2 months now. This condition on my Axolotl’s feet has started sometime since the algea bloom cleared up. I noticed the foot problem about 3 weeks ago and it seems to be getting worse.
What do you suggest I do. HELP!

“My Axolotl appears to have Aeromonas hydrophila, “”red leg”” bacteria. Its feet are mottled red and toes are becoming misshapen or shortening. I checked the “”Chemistry Store”” as referred to on this website, and nothing comes up for Holtfreter’s solution. I’m not sure how to make it.

The Axolotl is in a 15 gallon tank, water is averaging 72 degrees, water has been tested by a veterinarian and is good. he weighs 40 grams, is about 6 years old, type is white with dark eyes. I have had him since he was about 1 1/2 inches long. About 5.5 years. He is active and eating well. Has always eaten frozen blood worms.

There was an algea bloom in the tank about 3 months ago and was cleared up taking all wood and plants out and doing recommended water changes often and keeping this light off in the tank except on low for about 4 hours in the evening. I continue to keep the light off during the day and on low for only a few hours each night.

I have taken him to an exotic animal vet and he was not helpful.

What can I do?
Posted by Shari R., May 18, 2017 12:54 PM

Yes, you can hold them, briefly! Those feathery things are gills, so keep in mind they don’t breathe air.

Posted by Anonymous, Dec 16, 2016 08:31 PM

I bought my axolotl from craigslist as there was a breeder nearby who was selling. Now these were not babies or juveniles but full grown adults. She is an eight inch yellow leucistic axolotl and only cost me $15. For the two hour ride home, she did an exceptional job coping with the motion of a car on the highway. I live in the Midwest so temp isn’t much of a problem, and neither is lighting as she’s cozily place in the basement. I’m just worried that when winter comes it might be a bit too cold.
Posted by Anonymous, Dec 9, 2016 12:27 PM

This is really interesting and this is making me consider buying one. By temperatures though, do you mean an air temperature of above 74 degrees? Or just the water temperature. I’m not 100% sure if having a high air temperature (say mid 90s for a few days in the summer) will be enough to raise the water temp to above 74.

“Hello,
I love this article and i found it very helpful but I’m just wondering how much food should I feed the the axolotls daily. i was also wondering if it would be okay if its okay to just have 1 axolotl or if it will get lonely. I live in Canada and I don’t know if they are legal or not. Also I was wondering about how much each axolotl costs plus the food. I saw this axolotl food on Kijiji and was wondering if that was okay for them as well.
Thanks,
Susan.

“Hello,
I have a question for any axolotl experts. I currently have 1 male and 1 female together and the female has gotten larger(fatter) for sometime now. They are both 2 years old and if she is currently full of eggs which is what I assume from reading up on it. How long does it usually take for the eggs to be released?
Thanks,

“I’ve found that my 4 Axolotls like to be handled, note I don’t reach in and grab them I put my hand in the water and they will swim up and just hang out in my hand and then I will feed them soon after, My 4 are a few months old and I’ve found that they prefer to have substrate as it helps them move better as they get stressed out when they slide on the glass bottom.

Love your article as I didn’t know some of the things said.

Thank you for the tip,it would be really useful as I recently brought a salamander for my aquarium and till now I was feeding it brine shrimp eggs and dried worms, and it has been responding well, I brought it from Aquaristic Online, they have a n amazing range of fish foods, so you can easily choose from it,and also these are tested in the laboratory so you don’ have to worry about its quality, plus its an online store so you get them delivered at your home!have a look..http://www.aquaristiconline.com.au/collections/food

As someone who decided to get an axolotl after a decade of keeping aquarium fish, I gotta say that a smaller A/C is *much* cheaper than an aquarium chiller, and the only way to go if you have multiple tanks. Plus, it has the perk of keeping the rest of the room comfortable!
