There is a BTS at a pet stor near me and they have had him for her 3 months. His toes are falling off due to bad sheds, he hasn’t barley any bedding and they are using wood chunks. He is 400$ and In a kinda smaller cage but is also growing. When I first seen him there he was moving a lot and now i seen him yesterday and he looked in bad condition and wasn’t moving a lot. I wanna help him but one, to much. Two, I have no experience with them but I am learning about them. And three, I want to find someone that I know will take care of him and treat him back to health. My friends stepdad knows the owner and I wanna say something the the owner and how this animal is not taken care of and way over priced but who would listen to a 13 year old girl that barley knows anything lol!! If you can help me please do! Twitter: holly klavinger

“Wow never knew bobtails were worth so much. I had a family with many babies living in my garden before I moved. They loved cat food and strawberries.

Maybe I could have kidnapped and sold them for a few bucks 😉

Can you give your BTS honey ( a tiny bit) in their food?
Posted by Anonymous, Nov 21, 2018 09:30 PM

“I live in SE Queensland Australia.
I have blue tongue lizards living and breeding on my front overgrown embankment facing east. They seem to be happy. I have placed some plumbing pipes cut short for them to give them a home and to protect them from my dogs. I have seen babies hiding under rocks, and a large 30 inch plus blue tongue lying in the sun.
I also have frilly neck lizards (look like small dragons) breeding in my bromeliads.
I didn’t understand their diet or how valuable they are. Protecting the lizards gives me a sense of pride. Watching them grow and breed in a protected natural environment is priceless.
Thanks for the article. It is mango season here and will be able to discreetly feed them extra fresh greens on my way to the compost.
Your article has been extremely helpful.
Thankyou

I need help with what to do with baby blue tongue skinks, as I have recently successfully bred two healthy babies, and I am unsure on what I should do with them during the hibernation period, and there seems to be no websites that actually tell me or give me an idea on what to do, so if anyone can help me please contact me via my email: cam.dobson03@gmail.com. Much appreciated, cameron

I don’t think people understand quantities and things to get when it comes to blue tongued skinks, there are multiple types of blue tongued skinks, each have different requirements and sizes that they need, for instance vitamin supplements may not be useful to northern, but others who do not benefit as much from low humidity and uvb lamps will need it or will end up being malnourished if being denied the vitamin. Aspen is probably one of the best, since it may be dry but the heat that can resonate from it allows humidity form. If you believe giving live crickets to a BTS is correct then don’t get this reptile, they are much more needy and must be fed a precise diet depending on the type of skink. Look into more research if you have a question for most anonymous people objecting and going against phil goss’s post are most likely miss informed or don’t understand the difference in species, take a better look at what type your getting and try and buy from a local or close breeder and ask him/her questions as they’ve been doing it far longer and better than exotic vets and experts whom are more informed to mend medical problems than own one.

Please never ever ever supplement vitamin D3 to any reptile at all for it is extremely to overdose it which causes renal failure it is a very common misconception that you have to supplement D3 all the D3 they should be getting is from a UVB bulb. I don’t explain it very well here’s something to explain better, the info is coming from an exotic veterinarian: http://blog.whyanimalsdothething.com/post/160371292444/calcium-dusting

how can a respiratory infection be treated at home can i use the fogger mothed?
Posted by Anonymous, Mar 6, 2016 02:49 PM

I’d NEVER use Aspen for any BTS as it’s for too dry even Ozzy species need about 40% humidity and orchid bark is fine as long as humidity levels are in check.

i was wondering if live food is essential for a blue-tongued skink and also whether veggies are essentials too?

“I’ve had a couple BTS’s, and love them! The personalities are as different as humans, the one i have now is quite the diva, lol.

To address a few questions-

You should boil/cook the meat because it can have pesticides and/or worms and other parasites which can affect the whole enclosure.

They certainly can and do pass gas, and burp as well! Mine burps a lot after eating, and sneezes VERY loudly, lol.

It seems the only way to verify sex is done by a vet. Attemping to use those cruel sexing rods at home to check can have serious repercussions, including death.

To the person who mentioned lettuce- Lettuce is as best a way to unconstipate a BTS, and at worse totally worthless. If you care about the skinks health, switch to one of the greens listed above. Around here a few grocery stores carry a mixed blend of the four best, Turnip/Mustard/Collared/Spinach.

Hope this helps!

Can a blue tongued skink actually pass gas? This is a serious question although may sound funny.

I don’t know if the person with the flea issue got their answer…but…Seresto (spelling) flea collars completely eliminated our flea issue without having to treat the actual house. We were concerned with our other pets…and this was the first and only thing that has worked for us. Because it is a collar itvstays with the cat and not on the surfaces our lizards may roam.

We have full sized adult blue tongue skink. He was an adult when my friend acquired him. Which makes him 20+ years old. Still very alert and friendly. He is picky when comes to eating though. He gets moist cooked chicken, egg, cat food, and bananas. I see bananas are not highly recommended but it works for us and he loves them…he does not like fruits or greens although we still try once in a while.

can you put live plants in with them and if you can what kind

I have a question I was hoping someone might be able to help with. I have a healthy happy blue tongue skink and also two cats in my household. Unfortunately we have been battling a flea situation with the cats, and I have been researching methods that are safer than flea bombing. I have seen some really good reviews for plug in electronic pest eliminators, that supposedly help repel fleas, other bugs and rodents. Everything I have read says these devices are perfectly safe for household pets like dogs and cats, but not advisable (obviously) for pet rodents. Of course, I can’t find ANY information on how these might affect reptiles. Does anyone know where I might be able to find more information on this? this is what I am looking at http://www.amazon.com/Hoont-Plug–Electronic-Total-Eliminator/dp/B00ZVCAKZM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1442249777&sr=8-1&keywords=hoont+pest+eliminator
