I’ve been trying to read about the East African spiny-tailed lizard which I thought were related however it appears they are not. I think it might be a point worth noting here as they look so similar given the spiny tail and body type especially since the East African spiny-tail is an insectivores/carnivores causing us some confusion when researching care for ours.

Thank you for all the very thorough information. Just one minor point: kale does not contain oxalates (cabbage family). Spinach and chard are the ones with oxalates (rhubarb family) Kale should be okay, just don’t feed any pet animals anything in the rhubarb family..

Is there a difference between the red Uromastyx and the yellow Uromastyx? I am not sure which one I should go with, and I need to make my decision today. TIA

“I wouldn’t recommend using a seed substrate for uromastyx as they are likely to ingest fecal matter accidently when trying to eat the seeds.

Stomach contents from wild Egyptian Uromastyx contain insects. Mine loves them. Animals like humans know what they need to eat. I give mine insects maybe once a month and he’s doing beautifuly. I’ve kept lizards for 30 years all the large species. Uromasyx for me tip the balance especially the bigger ones. I am fascinated by them creataceous ancient and very human responsive. Beautiful pets to have. Superstars.

Absolutely no beardies and uro together. I have a rescue Egyptian covered in scars from bites from a beardie in the same space. He’s secure now on his own and is a true superstar.

I’ve had my auto for at least 14 years and believe he was at least 2 when I got him. I’ve noticed his nails have gotten very long. I have a sand substrate so I don’t think it’s a problem for him. Do I need to have his nails trimmed? At his age I’d hate to stress him out.

My Uro loves dandelions. I’d like to try other flowers but don’t know what are safe. Can we do marigolds, roses, others? What do you suggest?

Will my 3 year old Mali Uro do okay in an open air enclosure in North Texas during the summer days (temp ranges during day 95-105• with shade opps in cage? She loves to sit outside with me for short stints so I would like to move her in and out during day and leave her unsupervised but in a safe place. Am I increasing tisk of parasites, or other issues?

Had one of these as a pet back around 1995 and had him for a while. Sure wish we knew more about their care back then. My parents did their best, but the internet didn’t have the information it has now and the local pet store had no business selling these as pets. Our cage always seemed small and he would escape – often time it would takes days to find him. Eventually my father built an out side cage for him (Florida) and he would sit in the yard while we worked outside. Once he escaped and our neighbor came running to my father about this creature he had never seen before in his back yard. He had escaped 2 months earlier. Several more months goes by and he disappeared again to never be found. After reading this article, chances are he burrowed down. We didn’t know they did that and our property was mostly sand. Anyways, beautiful creatures and would love to have another one now that I am much older and more mature with my own kids, plus all the information available.

“You should not ever put a Uro and a Bearded Dragon together!!!!! They have different needs! Please Research!!! Your dragon can crush the skull of your Uro. and Uros like it hotter then Beardies! and have different dietary need!!!

“I live in Northeast Ohio. This summer it has been very hot and humid. I am having trouble keeping the humidity level in my uro’s cage below 30%. It has exceeded 60% for the past several days. I bought a larger enclosure (40 gallon with a screened top and glass sides, 36 x 18 x 18), use a millet substrate, and do not have water in the habitat. I have 2 fans running in the room to circulate the air, but the humidity in the tank is still too high. The temperature in the new enclosure near the basking spot is steady at about 100-110.

She has been eating but is otherwise sluggish and hasn’t been moving around much. What can I do to bring down the humidity level?

“We’ve shared our home with Rocco, a Mali Uromastyx for the past 11 years. She’s 18 years old now, and came from a neighbor whose son had lost interest in her.

A couple of things that may be helpful:

Ours is a super-fussy eater. We have tried many different foods. Here’s what she is willing to eat: clover; dandelion flowers (she doesn’t like the leaves, even though she is supposed to); sugar snap peas, snow peas; a few of the seeds in finch food (especially the red ones, whatever they are); dates. She’s survived 10 years on this diet and has appeared healthy throughout.

Another strange thing about our Uro: she hibernates (brumates?) from late November until early April. Every year. She wakes up once or twice to pee and poop and then goes back into her cave. The first year this gave us great concern, but she’s been doing the same thing every year without apparent harm. When she wakes up in April she sits around in a daze, and it takes her a few days to start eating. Note that we live in the Northeast US. Her habitat remains the same temperature throughout the year but she still seems to know it’s winter.

Finally, I don’t recommend lizards in homes with small children — for the lizard’s safety, not the children’s. They startle easy and can easily be dropped. And they have very long and delicate fingers and toes which I am guessing would be easily injured (ours hasn’t had any injuries yet, thankfully).

“Please do your research before buying or adopting one of these lizards.
I did not.
If I did I probably would have gotten a bearded dragon.
I wanted a lizard who likes to be held and I let the previous owners tell me his lighting, dietary needs etc.
I am going to keep him and I do feel that he is being treated better in my home that he was before. And as I learn more about these guys my care will improve.
However if I read this article before I adopted him I may have went with a different lizard.

I have a Uro and Beardie in the same tank for the past 3 and a half years. (Both female) They get along fine and are all over the 50 gallon tank. I do not feed the Uro any Mealworms only greens (variety). My question is should they be bathed in warm water? (and how often) Could I use a tropical mist on the URO like i do the Beardie. I have 6 finches and ready info on the URO would it be good to feed the Uro finch bird seed?

“The comment by anonymous on October 17. Totally right on. These are creatures that have very specific needs – they aren’t cats and dogs and shouldn’t be treated as such. They don’t like being doubled up in cages and someone often dies when they are… They shouldn’t eat beans. Spinach is commonly known to kill agama lizards… as does chard. Please find a good local herpetologist that can properly care for your lizard before buying one – if there isn’t one locally and you have no access, buy a cat or something.

Argh. I see these animals come back to our hospital in the worst condition due to parents buying them for kids, who in turn either abuse or have no idea how to care for them… or people anthropomorphizing them with traits they don’t possess, i.e. “”He likes when I…”” …chances are he doesn’t.

Here’s a small dose of reality: You can’t leave them for long periods of time and go on vacation, mainly because there is no pet sitter who understand what to do. They can be smelly if not kept clean. Heating a reptile cage is killer on your electric bill… when they get sick, expect a bill of 150-200 every single time you go to the herpetologist. You do need to go to a herpetologist, not a general vet, since they know little about these specialty animals.

…oh, and every two weeks someone brings in a lizard that they FOUND roaming free. I shit you not. Some people lie and just can’t handle them, but there has been an uptick in the amount of actual abandoned lizards. Mainly by kids in playgrounds, because they treat them like toys.

Be a good pet owner, these really aren’t toys. They are living, feeling creatures.
