The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) who became famous after starring in the iconic movie Crocodile Dundee in 1986 has died. He was estimated to be more than 90 years old and passed away the week before Christmas last year.

Burt was captured in Australia’s Reynolds River in the 1980s and helped shape Australia’s image as a rugged land with natural beauty and wildlife, according to Crocosaurus Cove Darwin, where Burt lived since 2008.

“Burt was truly one of a kind. He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years. Visitors from around the globe marvelled at his impressive size and commanding presence, especially at feeding time,” Crocosaurus Cove Darwin wrote on Facebook.
“The team at Crocosaurus Cove would like to thank everyone who visited Burt and helped celebrate his remarkable life. As we mourn his loss, we are reminded of the vital role wildlife plays in our shared history and the importance of preserving it for future generations.”

“We plan to honour Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign at the attraction, celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park.”

Saltwater Crocodile Information

Saltwater crocodiles are the largest reptiles in the world, with some attaining 20 feet in length and weighing 2,200 to 2,600 kg. They are found throughout much of Southeast Asia, parts of Australia and the eastern coast of India, inhabiting mangrove swamps, estuaries, deltas, lagoons and other bodies of water. The Philippines housed in 2013 what was at the time the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity, Lolong, who measured 20 feet in length and weighed 2,370 pounds. Lolong survived less than two years in captivity. He was kept in what amounted to a kiddie pool.
