Today is officially Diamondback Terrapin Day in Maryland. An announcement from the office of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has issued a proclamation making May 13 Diamondback Terrapin Day 2010. Alex Zerphy, a 12-year-old student advisor to the Terrapin Institute, appealed to the Governor’s Office and had the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), acknowledged by official state proclamation.
“Maryland is proud to recognize the important role that diamondback terrapins have in our environment, and that protecting, preserving, and increasing their numbers is an integral step towards improving our environment altogether,” according to the state proclamation.
