I’m Cece Ericson I live in White Rock, NM. I used to work for the Rattlesnake Museum with ( Bob Myers ). He gave me a Male Ornate Box Turtle, he’s a rescue. I named it Toby. He is very picky about his food. I have tried everything that was greens veggies, fruit and lettuce, kale. the only thing he likes so far is cherries, wax worms. That’s it. I tried hay straws too. I really don’t what else to give him. I have given him dry cat, mixed food that you soak in warm water. He will NOT eat it. he been pretty happy turtle.

I’m looking for a male to go with my grandsons female that we have had for two years now, we have a great outdoor enclosure with a large 20×8 inch welded capped ring with a brick tunnel that she burrows into . I have one who has lived in my yard for 4 years as she cannot get out. She has a burying hole, knows where the bird water pan is, and will come to back door for breakfast (A few dry cat food nibbles). I call her and she will turn and come. Most important she is a rain sign. When a box turtle is out and about, there is going to be rain somewhere in the area.

“We’ve had our Western Ornate box turtle since 1987, when she found us. She’s always been an outdoor turtle (we’re in Southern California, her homeland) and for many years we fed her the slugs, snails, worms, and grasshoppers we’d find in the yard, along with strawberries, mangoes, peaches, and lettuce. We eventually exhausted the population of slugs and snails in the garden, so now we feed her meal-worms from the pet store. She eats every day (five meal worms). Occasionally, she’ll walk away from her food, but only once every couple of weeks. She digs in to hibernate around October 15, and comes out around March 15. We built her an enclosure in the yard with a hill so she can see out, a fountain to bathe in, and her own strawberry plants.
I tried to get her to eat cat food (Science diet), but she wouldn’t touch it.

I broke the record. My ornate box turtle has been with me since Sept 1979 and I am writing this Feb 26, 2018. I did a lot of things right but honestly I did not do all this. I am taking care of him more now because he needs more tlc. I have given him light but primative type stuff. I need to do more with the lighting because he has been a little under the weather. I am treating him for a possible respiratory thing. Kind of complicated and does not seem like the usual cold or pneumonia condition he had in the beginning when I bought him from a pet store guy back in 1979. Any advice would help. He looks good but he has a watery nose problem. Not mucus just water . We did antibiotics and a couple vitamin a shots.

Ok twenty seven yrs ago, I started taking care of my Daugters, box tutle. I knew nothing about them , at the time. I have found them to eat every 3 to 4 days . Enless it is winter, they will hiibernate and go a week or more with out eating. The foods, I found my box turtles to eat nightcrawler,bread, greenapples, iceburge lettuces. Now call me weird , I never caged our turtles, believe it or not ,my turtle slept on there own blant in our bed in the winter, the always want down if they need to go potty and that’s when there hungry, box turtle
our like camles when they eat or drik they go the bathroom

Hey everyone don’t forget to get them some real treats like grasshoppers crickets, grub worms slugs, snails, earthworms don’t have alot of vitamins check it out for yourself, set a trap outside to catch things for them. Look under wet logs rocks. Be careful for spiders and snakes. They like fish too. They are turtles they do not eat like us… their metabolism is very different. I need to look it up again myself too. Very slow.

My little girl …..IS A BULLY!!! This box turtle has an attitude like this is my house, my food, my heat,,,etc. She bites the other’s. I’ve separated her.. BUT, at the same time… SHE’S probably my favorite. IT’S HER SPUNK!!! lol

Like pellets? Yeah but what if they don’t eat the pellets…I got my ornate turtles at Xmas time and I have fed them spinach as the previous owner told me they loved…but I think she was wrong. They have ate a little spinach..but they love the fresh strawberries the most. And a little bit of mushrooms..but I don’t know if they even eat the pellets…I forgot what my point is..but I am going to try some worms. Eeekkk..any advice? Oh yeah..how often do they come out to eat..cuz mineI’vee only seen eat like once in a week!!!! Omg help

I found a box turtle in my backyard with a pretty bad crack in his/her shell under his/her armpit. I’m not sure how to go about caring for it and I’m afraid it might get infected because the skin is showing. Suggestions?
