I’d like more information about the mating behaviors of anoles. If I get some of these lovely lizards will they readily breed and lay eggs? Do they have any special requirements for successful matings? Will a pair of anoles be enough, or should I set up a colony of three to five animals for better luck in breeding? Then comes the question of what I need to do if the do lay some eggs. Maybe I’d better buy a guidebook.

I need healp, its a long story so strap yourself in. I bought 2 anole half a year ago, a male and a female, unfortunetly the female died for some unknown reason. This made the male enter a sort of super deressed mode and went from well feed and prosperous to starving it self and not really wanting to move. Luckily he recoverd after a long while and once again. The thing is that in his terrarium he had a big cricket that he could not eat for it got to big, and they sort of became friends, but this cricket died just a few days ago and after just recovering and stil being extrimly thin he once again enterd depressed mode and wont eat. I’ve tried making him eat his mealworms and put in a cricket as a supliment but its not looking good. So my question is is there some good way to try to stimulate him to eat more or like something i can do, or if you’re ever Heard or seen somthing similar. All help is appreciated.

“Our daughter got one from her grandma as a Christmas present…little guy arrived pretty much frozen in a cardboard box.
He lived in his 10 gallon aquarium in her room, being misted 4-5 times a day, with his heat lamp and supply of crickets for 10(!!!) years!!!
No one could believe he lived that long.
Sad day when the little smidge died.

How will my outdoor anole in Austin TX survive the cold weather?
Posted by Anonymous, Oct 17, 2019 08:57 PM

I have a small green female anole living on my patio. (Along with a smaller brown female anole). I have noticed that both will eat tiny ants. One day, I decided to put some muffin crumbs down to attract more ants. Imagine my surprise when both of them ignored the ants and ate the blueberry muffin crumbs.

In trying to find the tange of green anoles, I stumbled on this website. I had never seen a green anole before 2010 and was surprised to find one on our patio door. Since then our yard in Corinth, Texas has become an anole factory. We literally have dozens of them in all sizes and several hues scattered all over our small urban lot. A few days ago, as I was watching a small one a few feet away, another one jumped onto my leg from the lawn.

“We have an Anole that lives on my screened in porch, she leaves every day through a hole in my screen and she stays outside until it starts getting dark and she returns to the porch.
The one thing I’m amazed about is she sleeps on my Christmas Cactus every night, but not just any spot, she actually sleeps on the same stem of the cactus every single night .

“What is the best way to manage the humidity level for the terrarium. This seems to be a challenge, even tho we heavily spray, and also have coconut fiber etc…the humidity seems to fall to 40 within a couple hours. How can we manage this without worrying the humidity is not high enough?
Is separating in the morning and evening enough?
How concerned do we have to be?

Does anyone know where the best place to get green ankles and supplies?? I recently caught one I the wild and I let it go, but now I want a domesticated one

Green Anoles can and will eat house Geckos. I recommend you all to not put Anoles with Geckos. Also Anoles need about 8 hours to bask in the sunshine, so put them in the sun for a bit not to much sunlight. If you put to many crickets in the tank with your Anole they will and possibly can kill your Anole. Thank you and happy caring.

My daughter has one and we got her a tank to put him in it and it seems fine, it’s eating meal-worms I was recommended in the pet shop, my question is the tank comes with a heated lamp but every time it’s on we all get concerned since it likes to climb to the top where it is so can it get burn? It’s not directly it does have a screen that protects it but still likes to be up there. Is it safe? We turn it the heated lamp at night due to the fact we can’t stay up making sure it’s ok.

I have what I know suspect is a green anole, residing in my bath tub. I think she came up through my drain, which is kind of weird. Anyways, she refuses to leave said bathtub. I’m worried she may fall Ill and possibly die there, but again she refuses to leave it, and since she’s from the wild (I live in the country country) I hesitate in putting her in a fake habitat. Suggestions on the best care for her? (I think I’m going to name her Tubthumper lol)

“If a green anole bites you never wash water over it, spray it, or try to take it off because it will become stressful for the green anole and it maybe will try to bite you harder, you need to wait patiently beside somewhere we’re it could jump and it will let go when it wants too. A green anole bite does not hurt because it is not effective to the human skin, so you could not be injured, you will only feel a squeeze or a tiny pinch when the green anole bites.

Hope this helped 😉

“Green Anoles can be housed with house geckos. That answers someones question. I believe there are other breeds they can be housed with too, but not certain. Google it.

Also answering Anonymous asking about her/his dying lizards. There is really not much you can do, just keep them comfortable. Have you checked to make sure the heat pad or lamp is working fine? they could just be cold. Also what kind of water are you using? That could be whats causing it. I would suggest rain water or well water, do not use city water! Also distilled water may not have enough vitamins and all that stuff in it. 🙂 Hope it helps.

This page helped my friend and I inform people about green anoles. We have many in our neighborhood and handed out fact sheets in case anyone caught one. We love to catch them and have learned a lot about them in the process. We wanted to spread our knowledge and this groups it together in one page. This was so helpful. Thank you so much.

I have a ZooMed RepriBreeze Screen cage for my anoles – it is 18x18x36 inches. There are 6 anoles living in it, as well as a 5-Lined Skink juvenile we rescued from drowning in our Lily Barrel. We have several artificial vines criss-crossing from side to side and up and down, and 2 plastic, and 3 silk vines of various sizes hanging from the sides…There are also two live Pothos vines, each in 5 inch plants. the substrate is ZooMed’s Eco Earth, in a 3 inch deep tray that fits the habitat, so I can keep it damp, and it gives the skink a place to dig under when he feels like it. Two mini lamps on top, one is UV, the other is a white Reptile light. haven’t got a thermometer in there, and since it’s screen, it’s probably room temp. I mist all the plant leaves 2-3 times a day, and there is a small bowl of water sunk into the substrate, just in case. Turns out we have two males and 4 females, with the two males being nearly full size I’ve had them probably 10 months now. eating plenty of crickets, won’t touch the wax worms I offered them, very active in this set up, and they shed every few weeks. feed the crickets Flukers high calcium cricket diet mixed with Aqueon tropical fish flakes.crickets get flukers cricket quencher fortified with calcium…so we aren’t really fanatical about dusting the crickets with reptivite weekly. , now the two males are beginning to get territorial and chase each other a lot, but outside of chasing and displaying their throat pouches they don’t seem to hurt one another – so I’m assuming there’s enough foliage in there. I have a 2 ft tall ornamental banana that “could” go in there, if it will fit – but the last leaves it produced grew to 10 inches long. I feed a dozen or so crickets every other day, since there are 7 lizards in there – figure we are going through 50 or more weekly. Anything else I should be doing? there’s a grapevine roost, angled about 10-12 inches under the lights, and they will use it. I am afraid that the lights may be too hot for the Banana Tree? especially as it grows closer to the cage top.the skink will clean up any dead crickets left in the bottom of the cage – since once they stop moving the anoles don’t “see” them. last time I replaced the substrate, I discovered tiny white baby crickets in it! also discovered, when we got invaded by little black ants, that the skink will eat them.Seen them lap up water from the lives and the screen sides, as well as several of them drink out of the bowl…think the skink needs some additional leaf litter but don’t know what’s safe for him….

What other species can green anoles be housed with?
Posted by Anonymous, Jul 14, 2017 03:44 AM

Any thermometers put on the “hot side” of the tank. If the heat source is in the middle put it in the middle.

“For the ones who needs a shopping list you need:
Reptile terrium/aquarium-more tall than wide
Substrate- soil or reptile carpet
Heat/UV light- 50 watt no more than 150
Food dish- for worms or commercial food
Water dish- though likes water from a sprayer more
Hiding spots- anything even at home
Plants/vines-to climb on and feel at home
Under tank heater- keeps warm at night unless house is over 75 degrees
Food- no larger than the anoles head

“I have enjoyed wild green anoles in backyard for years. Past few weeks noticed a decline in # and a male had really weird discoloration. He had a black spot on his side and closing his eyes which I took to be a sign of dying which was very upsetting. Now a female looks a little off with small spots so I am afraid she will die too. Question is: can I do anything to help her and what could be causing this? I just love them and do not want to lose all of them.
Thanks to anyone for advice.

I found a green anole in my house, it is currently too cold to put him/ her outside. I cleaned out an old fish tank and put him/her in it. i put leaves on the floor and some tree bark to climb on, i also added some medium sized rocks for sunbathing and these work good for shade as well. Im really hate insects, so brought some freeze dried crickets. Which he/she doesn’t seem to be eating. I will buy some live insects if i have too, ive had him/her in there for 2days and the lizard seems to be doing well but it hasn’t eaten, and im getting worried. Will it eat the freeze dried crickets or does it have to live crickets/insects? i am keeping the habitat moist and of course there is a water dish and black light.if the lizard needs day and night do i need another light for the daytime and only use the black light at night? im just trying to do best till the weather warms up and i can release him/her. I have dogs in the house and get my house sprayed for bugs regularly so i that is another reason i put the lizard in a tank. Again just looking for help on how to keep the lizard happy. It also has a heating rock that i purchased for it.

How dare the author even suggest to people that the anole can be disregarded in this manner! For a reptile expert–someone that supposedly has a passion for reptiles–this is absolutely disgusting! Putting this idea in people’s heads is repulsive! There are tons of food options available out there for people to use, if only they put down the remote and the cell phone to do the research.

The author of this article should ashamed, if only he had an ounce of compassion for the very things that he proposed to write about.

“I rescued a little green anole from the paws of my cat the other day and have since made him my pet. I keep him (“”Gizmo””) in a miniature terrarium outfitted with plastic umbrella, and he seems very happy.

Unfortunately, he is crippled from the damage from the cat … has no tail and his hind legs are not working. Otherwise, he appears to be fine and gets around his little habitat solely with the use of his front legs.

Any chance his tail will grow back? Might his legs heal themselves in captivity?

just updating my last comment. The anole is now healthy enough that she is climbing the walls. Also she is shedding (only on her tail) and is over halfway through. She seems to be doing well, and by tomorrow I expect her to be fully recovered. The injuries were not too serious, and she is a hearty animal. Thanks again.

I am now keeping it in a substrate-less small plastic terrarium with a water dish and a hide. Originally he was not moving at all, and for a while not even breathing. Then we got him to breathe, and he started opening and closing his mouth. Now he moves around freely and with ease, but you can still see the numerous bruises. to the person who wrote how many should you get, I’d say about 2-3 but you will need a big tank for them. try not to get 2 males and 1 female because then the 2 males will fight and usually 1 ends up dying.

how often do you feed the anoles ?
Posted by Anonymous, Jan 6, 2016 10:11 AM

I adopted a bearded dragon a few years ago (so I’m not quite a newbie but he was my first reptile). And thought a green anole would be a fun little one to have too (seperately of course). So I got an Exo Terra Glass habitat, a Reptisun 5.0 (UVB) and Daylight Blue 60w (heat). I put him in front of a window that gets indirect sun and would turn his cage in the morning so he would have a sunbeam to sit in if he wanted. I put 5 little crickets and 5 meal worms and would mist the wall foliage daily. He did fine the first week and was active. Then I put the lighting in there. And 2 weeks, we found him dead. I’m really bummed. Did I do something wrong? Or could he have been sick from the store and me not know it? He seemed to be doing well until the UVB and Heat light went in, not sure if it was a coincidence or not. I’m upset that maybe I did something wrong. Any suggestions?
