One of the largest herp shows in the country raised $17,955 for reptile rights and reptile conservation in October.

The North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show raised the money during its auction in Tinley Park, Ill., on Oct. 10. Show promoter Bob Ashley said $14,825 was raised for the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council and the United States Association of Reptile Keepers. Both organizations have represented the herp industry in legislative affairs, and Ashley said the money will be split equally between the two.

The auction also raised $3,130 to help conserve the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis). The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the crocodilian as Critically Endangered.

The total surpasses last year’s effort. A year ago the NARBC auction in Tinley Park raised $17,335 for PIJAC and Chinese alligator conservation. It also tops the funds raised at the NARBC auction in Anaheim, Calif., this past September. There, NARBC raised $11,515 for PIJAC and USARK.

“The auction was a great success,” Ashley said.
