Answer: The Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) got its scientific name from the flat oval osteoderms on the back of its neck — “erupting monitor!” The common name comes from its preference of habitats, which is savanna or grassland from Senegal to Eritrea and northern Zaire. It is a powerful, stocky creature with strong limbs used for digging, and powerful jaws and blunt, peg-like teeth for crushing. Its diet consists mainly of eggs, snails, millipedes, beetles and other invertebrates. The savannah monitor is a common pet in the United States and will live well over a decade if proper care is given. |
