Answer: The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is an ancient-looking reptile that dates back several million years. It has a high-keeled carapace with bony osteoderms imbedded in its skin. A vermiform appendage (fleshy worm-shaped lure) on the end of its tongue is used to attract prey such as fish. With extremely powerful jaws, the alligator snapping turtle can take several fingers if provoked to bite! |
