Three Brazilians have been fined the equivalent of $600 for harassing the anaconda in Brazil’s Santa Maria River in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. According to the Daily Mail, which translated an article that first appeared in O Correio News, the couple were on a boat when they spotted the snake, which they estimated to be about 17 feet in length.

Betinho Borges began prodding the reptile with an oar as boat driver Rodrigo Santos maneuvered the small boat with the engine. Sirlei Oliveira apparently took the video footage and posted it to Facebook. Borges was able to grab the snake by the tail as Santos put the boat in reverse to pull it in the center of the river. The snake was able to get away once, but Borges grabbed it a second time before ultimately letting the snake go. The snake had an obvious bulge in its belly as it swam, which hindered its ability to escape the two men.

According to the report, Mato Grosso do Sul environmental police fined the two men $600 each, though they have both lawyered up, claiming that no crime was committed.
