Urban Legend? Is There Any Evidence of a Green Anaconda Swimming in New Jersey’s Lake Hopatcong?

While Bascoules grabbed and secured the reptile’s head, his friend grabbed the tail. According to Bascoules, the snake, a green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) was more than 5 meters in length, or more than 16 feet. He estimated the snake to be about 175 pounds.

After capturing the snake, Bascoules put a hood over its head, and because it just ate, it calmed down quite a bit, based on the video of the snake with children laying next to it. Bascoules then placed the snake in his bath tub for the night and the next day, released the animal about six miles away in a larger body of water.

The green anaconda can be found in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Colombia, Venezuela and the island of Trinidad. It is one of the largest of the constricting snakes and is the subject of folklore and Hollywood movies.
